Because so many business owners have come to me when their web designers went MIA and they were no longer able to get their help, I have learned to use many of the major website builders online today.

This is because, when I started designing websites in 2008, I would manually write out the HTML and CSS code using notepad.

So, my understanding as a web designer isn’t based on one specific builder, instead it comes from an understanding of how to structure a website and make it work so users, internet browsers, and search engines all understand the site.

The Leap of Faith to Start a Business

For 10 years, I worked in marketing and development at a radio station in North Carolina. It was a stable job with benefits and insurance coverage for our whole family.

It was the kind of job you were supposed to keep.

I was actually a State Employee, because the station was owned by a community college. I could have stayed and retired with state benefits by the time I was around 53.

But after our second son was born, I felt God saying it was time to take a leap of faith.

My children would be grown by the time I was 53.

Their childhood was now and I didn’t want to miss it.

I wanted to be able to work from home. After a lot of prayer and trusting what the Bible says in James 1:5, which tells us that if we lack wisdom to ask God and he will give it…my husband and I decided to take a leap of faith.

In 2019, I quit my job and walked away from the security that came with it to do what I felt led to do.

Figuring Out What Business To Start

I had to start a business pretty fast.

My husband and I managed to work our budget so most of our expenses were covered through his paycheck. However, I did need to start making some sort of income.

The fastest way for me to start was by offering services I had experience doing at the radio station.

This included:

website design and maintenance
graphic design
email marketing
social media

Basically, whatever marketing services people needed.

I started Webb Digital Services and said yes to pretty much any marketing job that came my way.

I didn’t have a dedicated office, so the glamorous laptop lifestyle allowed me to work from my kitchen table during the day and from the closet floor at night.

There were nights I would work past midnight, then just as I laid down to go to bed, our baby would start crying and I might be up for another hour or longer.

It was a lot.

But I knew I was where I was supposed to be.

Confirmation Starting My Own Business Was the Right Step

After about 5 months, we found out my youngest son had a very severe food allergy that made it impossible for him to even go to a mother’s morning out program for a few hours a day.

About 7 months after that, COVID hit, schools shut down and all of a sudden both of my boys were home full-time.

My husband and I have repeatedly looked back at that season in life and said we don’t know what we would have done if I had not been able to work from home. We thank God that He led and provided for us every step of the way.

The Growing Need for Small Business Web Designers

When COVID shut everything down, so many business owners realized they needed a website. It was through that time that I was able to really hone in on web design services as being one of my primary offers.

I also knew as I built more websites, people would be asking about SEO.

SEO was super intimidating to me at first.

It seemed like a buzzword that marketers used to scare business owners into paying a lot of money for some abstract form of marketing.

But I knew people would be asking me about it as I built their websites, so I was determined to learn everything I could.

While I was researching the topic, I realized I had already been doing SEO. My background in website coding was helping me out here.

SEO at its core is making sure your website makes sense to search engines.

I remember being so excited when one of the first websites I redesigned for a small local business showed up on page one of Google, just under a large nationwide retail store.

This got me hooked and I wanted to help more people understand SEO so they could show up on Google too.
